Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
