TikTok Offers The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 billion AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift comes amid a increase in AI content, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people like content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” said a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The service announced that there are now over a billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are uploaded to the service every day, making clips made by AI a limited portion of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of AI content they view by accessing the content preference feature in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the filter encompass news, fashion, beauty, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies mandate users to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its terms of service.

Additionally, the service will henceforth attach an “AI-made” watermark to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This step is designed to stop users from attempting to circumvent the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is also establishing a $2 million awareness program for professionals and organizations to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This initiative will benefit educational bodies dedicated to teaching programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, following discussion over intentions to lay off numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection team in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by removing the most graphic content before it has to be seen by staff. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we additionally believe it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable process content quickly.”
